■ Webinar Introduction:
Traditional microscopy and flow cytometry technology are being commonly used in water quality monitoring and phytoplankton research. However, there are some limitations to using those analysis methods. Using traditional microscopy is time consuming to calculate algae and flow cytometry is unable to provide morphological data. Therefore, many aqua-related researchers and scientists worldwide are interested in finding modernizing and expediting methods for their research or monitoring programs. In this webinar, we will introduce flow imaging microscopy (FIM) which combines the function of both flow cytometer and microscopy into a single research instrument.

Flow imaging microscopy (FIM) first started gaining popularity as a technique for researching and monitoring harmful algae in the late 1990s.  FlowCam was one of the first FIMs on the market and has been commercially available for about 20 years. It has provided a fast and accurate solution to aquatic labs or facilities.

FlowCam is used worldwide for the study of marine and freshwater microorganisms. It can image, measure, and enumerate harmful genera and differentiate freshwater cyanobacteria HAB taxa from diatoms and other organisms.

This webinar is designed for participants who have not used FIM or FlowCam before and who are interested in building proficiency in this widely used technique. Mr. Hsiao, speaker, will present the history and principles of FIM and FlowCam, and aquatics applications.

FlowCam Cyano

Based on proven FlowCam technology, the FlowCam Cyano automatically identifies cyanobacteria from other algae and particles in aquatic samples. Using a patent-pending combination of excitation wavelength, phycocyanin fluorescence measurement, and image recognition software, the system automates what was previously done using manual microscopy. After differentiating the cyanobacteria from the other algae in the sample, VisualSpreadsheet software can be used to further characterize specific types of algae found in the sample using 40+ physical parameters.
